Cannes Festival: African cinema in competition for the Golden Palm

Lingui, the condition of women in Chad
Chadian Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, who has won several awards in Venice (including the Special Jury Prize for Daratt, in 2006), has already been in competition twice at Cannes with Un Homme qui crie, in 2010 (Jury Prize) and Grisgris, in 2016. It tells the dramatic journey of two women, Amina and Maria. (...) A drama that the very rigorous director undoubtedly raises to the level of an emblematic story to evoke the condition of women in Chad, and throughout Africa.
Loud and clear, the disadvantaged Moroccan youth
Moroccan director Nabil Ayouch focuses on the youth of his country in Haut et fort (formerly titled Casablanca beats). This is his first participation in the competition at Cannes, it is also the first time that a film of Moroccan origin is presented at the festival since its inception.
We can note that apart from these two films, unfortunately no African feature film was selected in the official selection of Cannes, whether for "Un Certain Regard" or other sections.
